Catch Up

I think the new Britney Spears song, “Womanizer,” is completely terrible.  Same goes for the new Beyonce song, “Single Ladies.”  Really cynical, artless, shitty tracks.

I think the new Gang Gang Dance record is amazing and so addictive.  It sounds better every time you listen to it.  Hearing so little new stuff these days, this record sounds especially excellent, and not the least bit disappointing.  “House Jam” is an instant classic.

I think the latest M83 is terrific through and through.  There’s no highlight as great as “Teen Angst” from the last record, but I think on average, Saturdays=Youth is a much better record.

Passion Pit has that “Sleepyhead” track out now, and it’s tasting like sweet bubblegum this week.  If this was 1998, I would be loving that track right along with “Drinking in LA” from Bran Van 3000.   The one thing I’m nervous about is that blogs and magazines are going to like this band and shove lots of lesser tracks down my throat throughout 2009.  But hey, if they have a whole great record, bring it on, fellas.

I haven’t yet absorbed the new Subtle record and the new Fucked Up record I bought from eMusic.

Someday, there will be a new Liam and Me record, and it will be incredible.  And they will be on the cover of Spin.

I can finally listen to the Mae Shi Miley Cyrus cover, in small doses, without going completely bonkers.  It’s such a good track, I was just listening way too much before and driving myself crazy.

Does It Offend You, Yeah? is not an “important” band, but at least half of their record is really good.  “Dawn of the Dead” is the best Bloc Party song since 2005, and it has steel drum samples!

For a few months, the only new music I heard was mainstream hip hop on car stereos.  There is so much innovation going on in hip hop, it’s really fun hearing the new tracks when they come out.  It’s hilarious that Lil Wayne is on pretty much every great new cut, and making no mistakes whatsoever.

I can’t believe no one ever told me about the Fleetwood Mac song “Gypsy.”  Then again, I can’t think of anyone even likely to know that song.

It’s nice to be able to investigate music at my own pace without feeling like doing so will make me fall behind on what’s going on.
