The Stolen Base Rule is Gonna Kill Me.
Hi,
I’m spending a lot of time these days reading for classes. And studying. Legitimately studying. How terribly boring for you.
I spent about 4 hours the other day cutting up some audio for a piece that is going to take absolutely forever to make, but not really forever. A long time.
I tried to see Mountains the other day, but they cancelled. One advantage to real mountains over the...

This is an apology
Hey, I totally changed my mission, sorry.
I have been posting over here:
theculturecounter.blogspot.com
But yeah, I have had to reaccess my creative output, and I’m afraid that recording two just-decent songs in a week when I got sick anyway didn’t fit in well with the plan.
The good news is that the new Kalpana album is done, done, done. Totally mastered and everything. ...

Music Vs. Art
For the first time in about (yikes) ten years, I made a big messy drawing yesterday. This was for a class in school. I really liked making the drawing and I was very much into staring at it when it was done. A big chunk of it appears below. My instructor asked how the drawing process was different from the movement process (expressive body movements for relaxation, therapy, group cohesion,...
What I mean to say is,
If you can put aside the fear drilled into your heart by our worst elected officials and our most horrible television and radio personalities, only then can you continue purposefully into the future. Otherwise, you are likely just to land there by accident, totally disoriented but for your paranoid anxiety. Which is a terrible punishment, not a righteous victory.
In Cambodia
…when they bring out a wedding cake, they sing “Happy Birthday” because that’s what white people do on television when there is a cake. After singing, they shoot the guests with silly string.
And people drive cars with the word “LEXXUS” written on the doors in huge letters.
Best of 2008
2008 was one of my longest years in memory. I stuffed so much into those 12 months that by the end I couldn’t believe that the things that happened in January weren’t actually from three of four years ago. Let’s see…I made a 180 degree career change that made my boss’s jaw drop. I was the best man in my friend Kennedy’s wedding and the floor sweeper in my...

When I Was In...
NYC, I spent 6 months at a company that shared office space with a well-known hip hop label, and the employees of both companies all had their own labels and music projects on the side. Every so often, someone would walk around from desk to desk, silently leaving a copy of their new sticker or flier or mix on each person’s desk, and then sit back down. Without exception, someone would say...
School's done for fall!
So I was looking at reviews and videos of the Mae Shi this morning, and my computer froze up, and began playing, alternately, the audio track from a car commercial (offering higher fuel efficiency, no less), “Mr Brightside” by the Killers, and “Escapade” by Janet Jackson. This seemed like an appropriate way for my computer to react to the Mae Shi.
Okay
I think it is really seriously fucked up that somebody was trampled to death by Wal-Mart shoppers looking to save, I don’t know, maybe a maximum of $200 each.

An eariler version of the report stated that officers trying to give CPR were prevented from doing so by the Wal Mart shoppers.

Happy Chinese Democracy Week!
My review of the new G n’ R tracks on the web: Good, but the hi-hats are at least .5 dB too hot at the end of the second verse of “Shackler’s Revenge.” Who dropped the ball on that one, huh Axl??? All in all, the tracks probably could have used 4-5 more months of tweaks.
Also, I wish the multiple guitar soloists would continue playing during all the parts where Axl...

Catch Up
I think the new Britney Spears song, “Womanizer,” is completely terrible. Same goes for the new Beyonce song, “Single Ladies.” Really cynical, artless, shitty tracks.
I think the new Gang Gang Dance record is amazing and so addictive. It sounds better every time you listen to it. Hearing so little new stuff these days, this record sounds especially excellent, and not...
From the Chinatown Bus -- 10/12/08
I am riding a bus to Philadelphia that picked me up two hours late. Yet another terrific performance from the Chinatown Bus crew. I am seated next to a tiny Chinese man who smells precisely like the pigs from camp. He has dents in his skull, or maybe that’s just his haircut. He is talking on his cell phone. He has been talking on his cell phone all night. He will not stop talking on his...

Glass Animal (mems Kalpana, Ben Flash and his Boyish Good Looks, ex-ANOTHER)
I decided that if I wasn’t going to go all-out and make music for a living, I was going to make music strictly as a hobby. I cannot stand beginning projects and leaving them hanging or not really doing the best I can with them. Which is good news for you; it means a lot...

What A Fan Boy!!
This is from a conversation I had with one of the moderators of shoutmouth.com about two years ago. This was before that brilliant and endlessly engaging site was impaled by — what else — ads for ringtones and content about ringtones. A lot of this still stands up. I guess it will be changing less and less as I continue to get older.

Schedule
On Saturday, July 12, I am playing a FREE show with my band of five and a half years (holy shit, 5.5 years!?), Kalpana, at Galapagos in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This will be our first show in one year, and we will be debuting a lot of new material from our forthcoming, yet-unnamed album.
The album is 99% recorded, and about 10% mixed. Much more on that later.
I am forming a band with my friend...

On Wednesday,
I was a little horrified to discover that my lucky socks, the pair with the orange stripes, have apparently run out of luck. So it is time for me to find a new lucky charm. Here is something I wrote to a friend about the wonderful new Wolf Parade single. It’s an exerpt from an e-mail, and it was unusually considered, even for me. I go through these mini themes in my life, where I notice...

The tragedy of being one of my cats is apparent in their play. Fiction will stalk a sparkly bell toy weaving back and forth from behind a chair, just working up the fury to pounce. He finally does, but the moment he puts his paw on the toy, it necessarily ceases to dance, and it ceases also to be something that Fiction wants. You can watch as he immediately loses interest. This is because...

I know. It’s like that Noise Addict song says, “try to concentrate on living my life and not on writing life down.” I am making an album for the RPM challenge. It’s not going anywhere yet. I bought a broken mpc and I’m trying to fix it. That would help. This reminds me, I have to start carrying my recordier around starting today. That’s a typo I can get...
